This week has been disastrous in terms of cooking.  The recipes I tried were only so-so (not worthy of telling you about).  I foolishly decided to let bread dough rise while I went to Bible study and came home to four deflated loaves.  My jam didn't quite jam.  And the list goes on...

So consider this Tasty Tip Tuesday. This one is dedicated to Lauren, my former college roommate and one of my bestest friends in the world.

Today's Tasty Tip - the Seal-a-Meal!  This is one of the best kitchen appliances in the world, and yet I've discovered that few people in my circle of friends actually use it.  Lauren had never heard of it until I mentioned it to her.  Such a shame...

So what's this baby good for?  Why do I love it so much? 

It is hands down the best way to prepare food for freezer storage.  And if you are living on your own like Lauren, with a brand new slow cooker, you are going to want to store some of your cooking in the freezer (otherwise you'll end up never being able to eat it all).  Or, if you are like my husband and I and you don't enjoy eating the same leftovers three days in a row, the Seal-a-Meal allows you to freeze leftovers in portion sizes without filling up your freezer.

So let me show you how it works...

A few weeks ago, we made chili.  It was Pioneer Woman's recipe from her new cookbook - it was amazing but it made an entire joke.  Instead of eating chili day and and day out for an entire week, we decided to freeze some of it for later.

I decided to freeze my chili in serving sizes, so I put one serving size in a Seal-a-Meal bag.  The Seal-a-Meal  freezer safe bags are available in all different sizes.  They are much, much, much thicker and way more durable than Ziplock freezer bags.

I know, I know...the chili doesn't look all that appetizing in the above picture.  But it was me.

Once you have your bag filled, you hook one corner over the white tab inside the Seal-a-Meal.

Then, you close the lid, and press the vacuum button.  The machine then sucks all the air out of your bag...hence, no freezer burn.

Look at it go...

Once it's done with the vacuum process, it seals the bag by literally melting the plastic together.

And voila...your food is ready to go!  I love these because you can lay them flat when freezing them, so they don't take up much room in your freezer.  And they have a nice spot for labeling the food and date...always a good idea.

  2. We have one of these too! (A different brand.) I agree with you — quite handy to have! Of course, the other part you need is actual room in your freezer… which is a whole other story…
